Hundreds of Flights Cancelled as Lufthansa Strike Enters Day 4

(MENAFN) Hundreds of flights were grounded Thursday as a crippling labor strike at Lufthansa stretched into its fourth consecutive day, with pilots and cabin crew walking off the job in unison and snarling operations across the airline group.

The joint walkout by flight crews disrupted services at Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, and regional subsidiary Cityline, delivering a sweeping blow to one of Europe's largest aviation networks. At Frankfurt Airport, operator Fraport reported 656 cancellations out of 1,313 scheduled takeoffs and landings — figures that span all carriers operating at the hub, though the overwhelming majority of disruptions were traced back to Lufthansa.

Hopes of an early resolution evaporated Wednesday after mediation talks between Lufthansa and pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit collapsed without agreement on core sticking points. The breakdown dealt an added blow to the carrier, as the industrial action cast a shadow over ceremonies marking Lufthansa's 100th anniversary.

At low-cost arm Eurowings, the strike action was confined to Thursday, while turbulence at other carriers within the Lufthansa group threatened to spill into Friday. A company spokesperson said Eurowings is operating more than 70% of its scheduled flights, though only a portion of its fleet falls under German strike legislation. The spokesperson added that a three-digit number of pilots on German aircraft have volunteered to work, offering a limited buffer against further disruption.

With no deal in sight and talks at an impasse, travelers face mounting uncertainty as the standoff between management and labor shows no immediate signs of breaking.
