US Signals Support for Ending Israel–Hezbollah Conflict

(MENAFN) A senior U.S. official has said that President Donald Trump would be receptive to an end to ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, according to reports.

Washington, however, has emphasized that Lebanon is not part of its current peace negotiations involving Iran. The official made clear: “This is not something we have asked for.”

Iran has argued that its ceasefire arrangement with the United States also extends to Lebanon and has accused Israel of violating the terms of that understanding.

The official also noted that a broader diplomatic settlement could include Lebanon, stating: “The president would welcome the end of hostilities in Lebanon as part of a peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon,”

The comments follow diplomatic discussions involving Israeli and Lebanese representatives, during which the possibility of a ceasefire was reportedly raised in a meeting hosted by the U.S. Secretary of State, according to reports. The talks reportedly included ideas for mutual confidence-building steps, with both sides indicating they would consult their respective governments before responding.

Separately, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and encouraged a reduction in military activity in Lebanon. He indicated that Israel would scale back operations following their conversation.

“I spoke with Bibi, and he's going to low-key it,” Trump told reporters, referring to Netanyahu by his nickname.
