Pakistan Calls for “Time and Space” to Advance Middle East Diplomacy
“We continue to believe that time and space must be allowed for ongoing diplomatic efforts to facilitate a return to dialogue and engagement,” said Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar, following a vote at the United Nations Security Council on a draft resolution concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
The draft, introduced by Bahrain, called for coordinated “defensive” measures to safeguard navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the resolution failed after Russia and China exercised their vetoes. The proposal received 11 votes in favor, with Colombia and Pakistan abstaining.
Pakistan is actively facilitating indirect negotiations between the US and Iran. Iftikhar reiterated Islamabad’s “continued” and “unwavering” support and solidarity with Bahrain and other Gulf partners and emphasized the country’s commitment to pursuing a durable diplomatic solution.
Highlighting the humanitarian and economic stakes, he urged that civilian ships and crews must be protected and that normal passage through the Strait should be restored. “If the military escalation and disruptions persist, the suffering will extend far beyond the region, translating into widespread economic hardship,” he warned.
“At this critical juncture, restraint, diplomacy and dialogue must prevail,” Iftikhar added.
