White House Confirms Trump Knows About Pakistan’s Iran Proposal

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has “been made aware” of Pakistan’s recent proposal to extend his deadline for a deal with Iran by two weeks to allow further diplomatic efforts, according to reports.

“The president has been made aware of the proposal, and a response will come,” White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in a brief statement.

The announcement follows Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s request for Trump to prolong the deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by two weeks “to allow diplomacy to run its course.”

Trump did not directly comment on the proposal during a short phone exchange with a news reporter but confirmed he would receive a full briefing from his team. “I can say this - that I know him very well. He's a highly respected man, all over,” Trump said, though the statement did not specify to whom he was referring, likely Sharif.

When asked about the progress of the negotiations, Trump added, “I can't tell you, because right now we're in heated negotiations."

The developments occurred just hours before Trump’s 8 PM Eastern Time (0000 GMT Wednesday) deadline, after which he has warned that "a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again." The president had also previously threatened that Iran’s energy infrastructure and bridges would be targeted if his deadline for a deal was not met.
