U.S. Permits Russian Oil Shipment to Reach Cuba
The vessel, which is carrying roughly 730,000 barrels of crude oil, is anticipated to arrive at the Matanzas terminal by Tuesday. This delivery is expected to provide Cuba with a much-needed energy boost at a time when tensions with the United States continue to intensify.
As highlighted in the The New York Times report, the arrival of the Russian tanker could serve as a temporary energy lifeline for Cuba, potentially sustaining the country for several weeks before its fuel supplies are depleted.
Authorities indicated that the shipment may also help ease mounting strain on the Cuban government, which is grappling with the threat of economic collapse and increasing pressure from the United States. Additionally, it underscores that Cuba can still rely on its longstanding partner, Russia, at least in the short term.
Back in January, the Trump administration effectively imposed an oil blockade on Cuba, warning countries against supplying fuel to the island. In one notable case, the United States redirected a tanker that had been en route to Cuba, preventing it from reaching its destination.
Although the US Coast Guard reportedly had two cutters stationed in the area capable of intercepting the Russian vessel, the administration ultimately chose not to act on any such order.
Officials have not provided a clear reason why the White House refrained from blocking the tanker, nor have they clarified whether future Russian oil shipments will be permitted to reach Cuba, which lies approximately 100 miles (161 kilometers) south of Florida.
