Israeli Airstrike Targets Beirut’s Southern Suburbs

(MENAFN) An Israeli airstrike struck Beirut's southern suburbs in the early hours of Monday, as Israel pressed ahead with its broadening military campaign across Lebanon, local media reported.

The strike followed an urgent evacuation warning issued by Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee, who called on residents to immediately abandon several neighborhoods in southern Beirut — among them Haret Hreik, Ghobeiry, Laylaki, Haddad, Borj el-Barajneh, Tawhidat al-Ghadir, and Shiyah — according to Lebanon's state news agency. No casualty figures or damage assessments were immediately available.

In a simultaneous and separate strike, Israeli warplanes bombed the town of Baraachit in the Bint Jbeil district of southern Lebanon, leaving one person dead and another wounded, the news agency reported.

The latest bombardments form part of a relentless military campaign that has seen Israel rain airstrikes across Lebanon and launch a ground offensive in the country's south — operations that began following a cross-border assault by Hezbollah on March 2.

The toll of the Israeli offensive has since mounted sharply. Lebanese authorities report that 1,142 people have been killed and a further 3,315 wounded since the campaign began — figures that reflect the deepening humanitarian cost of a conflict showing no signs of abating.
