Yemen’s Riyan International Airport reopens to air traffic on Sunday

(MENAFN) Yemen’s Riyan International Airport in Hadhramaut reopened to air traffic on Sunday, receiving its first flight since being largely out of operation for several years. The domestic flight from Aden International Airport marked the official resumption of operations at the coastal city airport in Mukalla.

Authorities expect the reopening to enhance connectivity between Yemen’s provinces, facilitate travel for residents, and signal a gradual return of aviation activity at the strategically located facility. Preparations are also underway to launch international services, as part of the Civil Aviation Authority’s broader plan to rehabilitate airports and restore full operational capacity.

Officials said the return of flights is expected to support both commercial and humanitarian movement and strengthen Hadhramaut’s role as a key economic and logistical hub. Technical rehabilitation work was recently completed to improve safety standards and service quality.

Riyan Airport has operated only intermittently since 2015 due to Yemen’s prolonged conflict, which disrupted air travel nationwide. Presidential Leadership Council member and Hadhramaut Governor Ahmed Salem al-Khanbashi noted that Riyan and Seiyun airports had previously been stripped of equipment during periods of instability. Yemeni government forces recaptured Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra provinces from Southern Transitional Council fighters earlier this month, restoring government control over nearly half of the country’s territory.
