Lithuania plans to expand military training facilities

(MENAFN) Lithuania announced Monday plans to expand its military training facilities as it strengthens its armed forces and prepares for a larger presence of allied troops.

A new brigade-sized training area will be established in Kapciamiestis, southern Lithuania, near the borders with Poland and Belarus. The country will also double the size of its existing training site near Taurage in western Lithuania by extending into a neighboring district, according to public broadcaster.

The State Defense Council said the Kapciamiestis site was chosen for its strategic importance.

The area lies within the Suwałki Gap, a narrow corridor connecting the Baltic states to the rest of NATO, which Lithuania, Poland, and NATO consider vital for regional security.

The expansion coincides with Lithuania’s efforts to increase its armed forces through higher conscription and reserves and to acquire new military equipment. Germany has pledged to deploy a brigade of several thousand troops to Lithuania by 2027, further driving the need for larger training areas.
