Modi, Trump Hold Phone Talks on Trade Deal
The conversation unfolds amid ongoing negotiations between New Delhi and Washington for a comprehensive trade agreement.
"Had a very warm and engaging conversation with President Trump," Modi said in a post on X. "We reviewed the progress in our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments. India and the U.S. will continue to work together for global peace, stability, and prosperity."
Both leaders explored opportunities to deepen collaboration across multiple sectors including trade, critical technologies, energy, defense, and security.
This marks the third conversation between the two since Trump levied 50% tariffs on India in August—with half designated as a 'punitive' response to New Delhi's Russian oil imports.
India and the US have pursued trade negotiations in the months following the tariff implementation.
A diplomatic team headed by Deputy US Trade Representative Rick Switzer met with Indian officials in New Delhi earlier this week.
On Monday, Trump threatened to impose more tariffs on India, accusing it of dumping rice into the US.
The US president has repeatedly defended his tariff strategy as successful. "The tariffs have reduced the budget deficit by 64%, and frankly, we haven't even started yet," Trump stated on Thursday.
