Typhoon Matmo Sparks Power Outages in South China

(MENAFN) Typhoon Matmo, the 21st named storm of the 2025 Pacific typhoon season, struck China’s southern coast Sunday afternoon, unleashing destructive winds and widespread power outages, according to Guangdong’s meteorological service.

The storm made landfall at approximately 2:50 p.m. local time in Xuwen County, part of Zhanjiang City in Guangdong Province, packing maximum sustained winds of 42 meters per second at its center and registering a central pressure of 965 hectopascals.

Severe disruptions followed as the typhoon battered Suixi County in Zhanjiang, damaging power infrastructure and plunging parts of the area into darkness. Emergency crews were immediately dispatched to evaluate the extent of the damage and commence restoration work.

By 7 p.m., the Guangdong branch of China Southern Power Grid had deployed close to 40,000 personnel, along with approximately 170 emergency power vehicles and 550 generators, to the hardest-hit regions.

Meteorologists warned the system is tracking northwest, with Zhanjiang and nearby Maoming City expected to see sustained rainfall through Monday, shifting from moderate showers to heavier downpours.

In a swift fiscal response, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC)—China’s top economic planner—allocated 200 million yuan (roughly $28.15 million USD) from the central budget to support urgent recovery efforts across Guangdong and the neighboring island province of Hainan.

The NDRC stated that the allocated funds will support the swift restoration of essential infrastructure such as roads, bridges, water systems, schools, and hospitals, aiming to quickly resume normal life and economic activity in the affected regions.
