Syria concludes first parliamentary elections

(MENAFN) Syria held its first parliamentary elections since the fall of Bashar Assad’s government on Sunday, according to reports.

Between 7,000 and 8,000 voters selected by the Central Electoral Commission of the Syrian Arab Republic chose 140 members of parliament. The remaining 70 seats of the 210-member assembly are to be appointed by interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, with the final list of names expected on Monday.

Syrian officials stated that over 1,500 candidates, including more than 200 women, competed for the assembly, which will serve a renewable 30-month term.

The Kurdish-controlled northeast and the Druze-majority Sweida province in southern Syria, which have experienced massacres of Alawites, Druze, and Christian minorities, were excluded from the vote as they remain outside Damascus’s authority. Their 32 seats will remain vacant.

Under a temporary constitution introduced in March, the new parliament will exercise legislative authority until a permanent constitution is adopted and new elections are held. Al-Sharaa had previously noted that holding direct elections is currently impossible due to millions of Syrians being displaced internally or living abroad as a result of the war.

In May, US President Donald Trump met with al-Sharaa and announced the lifting of most sanctions imposed during Assad’s rule. Al-Sharaa described the decision as “a historic and courageous decision, which alleviates the suffering of the people, contributes to their rebirth, and lays the foundations for stability in the region.”
